It's not too late for class of 2010 senior pictures! File This Under "Over Reaction" - Vermont Photographer Trespassed For Taking Pictures Outside of Mall
I really try not to get all fired up when I read stories about fellow photographers, both professional and amateur getting hassled by police, rent-o-cops, and misguided business owners, but sometimes I can's help myself! Case in point: Photographer Banned From Mall - For Taking Pictures Outside Of Mall
The reaction of the business owner, police, and the employees speaks to the irrational levels of fear Americans live with. Fear mongering is becoming an American pastime. Look no further than our politicians and their main stream media lackeys. The government sells fear as a means of control, knowing that a large segment of the population will sacrifice individual liberty for a false sense of security. The media sells fear, because well, it sells!
I have no issue with the mall banning someone for taking pictures on their property. They own it and that's their right. I don't even have an issue with the mall banning someone for taking pictures on their property even if they have taken a public subsidy. The issue I have is that this mall banned this photographer from the mall for having taken pictures on a public sidewalk not on their property. It would be much like me shooting pictures on the bike path and foot bridge and then having Valley River Center issue me a trespassing citation (because they hate photographers).

Been Down This Road Before
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. These LEOs at least acted in a professional manner. They might be a little ignorant of the law, but nothing got out of hand. Last time I had a discussion like this, it didn't go so well. In my case, the officer did a lot of yelling and threatening, and I did a lot of listening. Just the price you pay for having a camera.

Scouting For Shooting Locations

I am currently scouting for shooting locations in the Eugene / Springfield area for a couple of upcoming projects. I really need to locate a lager home in the local area that is well furnished for a 2-3 hour photo shoot. If you have a home that fits the bill please contact me and see if we can work out some sort of barter of services for the use of the location.
I also have a separate project that needs some industrial space to shoot in. Again a 2-3 hour photo shoot.

Off Topic Medical Insurance Rant

Just got a look at the revisions to this years medical insurance policy. Pretty scary! I am currently accessing my previous employer's medical plan through the COBRA plan. This year they have raised the deductible to $2500 per person $7500 for a family, and then will only pay 70% (of what they think it should cost). I was told that they would cap the out of pocket at $6000 per person and $12,000 for a family. Pretty scary! Worst case is $7500 plus the $12,000 plus the premiums, plus co-pays equals $24,500 in medical expenses. I am telling everyone in the family DO NOT GET SICK OR HURT. That's a luxury I can ill afford. $24,500 is a pretty good sized chunk of change.
